Brief Background on WSHS Wrestling:
Winter Springs High School opened its doors for the first time in August 1997 with freshman and sophomores only. The wrestling team, consisting of twenty-four 9th and 10th graders competed on the varsity level, despite having only four (4) wrestlers with at least one year of experience. The team compiled a 7-5 record in its first season and qualified two (2) wrestlers for the state tournament. In 1998-99 the team again compiled a 7-5 record against substantially better competition, and had impressive showings in several tournaments, including the 4A North II Region Tournament where the Bears finished 4th and qualified six (6) wrestlers for the state tournament. In 1999-2000, WSHS captured the Seminole Athletic Conference and District 3 titles, compilling an 8-2-1 record after moving up to the top classification (3A). Joe Curry and Brett Weber won region titles, and Clint Walt also qualified for state. Curry and Walt placed 4th and 6th respectively at the 2000 State Championships in Lakeland.
